Albany State Marine Reserve protects water at the northern end of McLaughlin Eastshore State Park in California’s eastern San Francisco Bay. For a straightforward visit, plan to observe the bay from public shoreline paths. Nearby protected areas have different names and rules, so a general waterfront activity listing is not enough to authorize entering the water.

Safety information

Stay on established shore access rather than walking onto exposed mudflats. In the neighboring Albany Mudflats State Marine Park, boating, swimming, wading and diving are prohibited. Check the precise protected-area boundary before planning any water activity.

Leave natural features and wildlife undisturbed. Consult the official bay protected-area rules for the exact place involved. Do not infer fishing permission from a generic activity icon or assume all Albany waterfront designations cover the same water.

About the marine reserve

History

The reserve forms part of the Eastshore conservation landscape. In 2012, the surrounding state park was renamed for Save The Bay co-founder Sylvia McLaughlin.

Wildlife and habitat

Nearby Albany mudflats support shorebirds, herons, egrets and waterfowl. Pickleweed and cordgrass occur in the salt-marsh setting. These observations describe the local habitat, not guaranteed sightings or permission to enter it.
