Arthur B. Ripley Desert Woodland State Park preserves Joshua trees and California junipers in California's Antelope Valley. Two short nature trails make this a walking stop rather than a driving tour. Bring your own water, and use the pedestrian entrance from Lancaster Road.

Water and wildlife precautions

The park has no running water. Carry enough for your walk and picnic. Rattlesnakes live in the woodland, so watch where you step and give wildlife room to move away.

Protect the woodland

Keep dogs on a leash in the picnic area. Dogs cannot accompany you on the trails. Follow the visitor trail rather than the animal paths that cross it.

Finding the Lancaster Road entrance

The walk-through entrance is on the north side of Lancaster Road near 205th Street West. Use the park's full name when planning your arrival: Prime Desert Woodland Preserve in Lancaster is a different place.

Nearby parks

Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve State Natural Reserve is east along Lancaster Road. Saddleback Butte State Park is farther east, beyond Lancaster on East Avenue J. Both are separate road stops with their own entrances and rules.

Choose a short nature walk

Start with the numbered posts on the Ripley Nature Trail self-guided tour. The guide explains how desert and mountain plants meet here. Look for the different forms of Joshua trees and junipers before taking the longer juniper route, which branches from the first trail.

Picnic and trail facilities

The picnic table sits under a ramada that offers shade and some protection from wind. An outhouse serves the park. California State Parks describes both nature trails as flat. Ask staff about the route surface and access features needed for your visit.

About Arthur B. Ripley's woodland

How the woodland was preserved

Farmer Arthur "Archie" Ripley left this land to the state in 1988. He kept the woodland while much of the surrounding valley was cleared for other uses. California State Parks now protects this surviving Joshua tree and juniper community.

Animals among the Joshua trees

Black-tailed jackrabbits, cottontails, coyotes, and roadrunners are among the animals recorded here. The park's interpretive guide also describes how juniper berries feed birds and rodents. Watch quietly from the trail without expecting a particular sighting.
