Badlands National Park in South Dakota combines eroded buttes, fossil-bearing rock, and mixed-grass prairie. The North Unit is the practical starting point for a first visit, with paved Badlands Loop Road, overlooks, short boardwalks, and the Ben Reifel Visitor Center. The South Unit on the Pine Ridge Reservation requires separate planning and has no road running directly through it.

Fees, hours, and seasonal access

Weather, footing, and wildlife

Carry drinking water, sun protection, and layers. The exposed terrain offers little relief from heat, and storms can arrive quickly. Wet clay becomes very slippery. Wear sturdy, closed-toe footwear and watch for holes, cracks, and cactus spines.

Keep at least 100 feet (30 m) from large animals such as bison and bighorn sheep, and move farther away if an animal reacts to you. Do not reach into places you cannot see; rattlesnakes can shelter near rocks, steps, and vegetation. Avoid high ground and washes during thunderstorms. Mobile service is limited, so carry maps and know your route. Call 911 for an emergency.

Leave fossils and habitat undisturbed

Leave fossils, rocks, plants, and cultural objects where you find them. Do not collect a fossil as a souvenir. Keep wildlife food-free by securing meals and trash, and use designated parking and picnic areas.

Pets must remain attended and on a leash no longer than 6 feet (1.8 m). They may use developed areas and places open to vehicles, including campgrounds and parking areas. Hiking trails, public buildings, backcountry areas, and prairie dog colonies are off-limits to pets.

Camping and overnight planning

An entrance pass does not reserve a place to sleep. Cedar Pass Campground requires reservations, while Sage Creek offers free camping on a first-come, first-served basis. Backcountry camping does not currently require a permit, but speak with a ranger before setting out. Camps must be at least 0.5 miles (0.8 km) from roads or trails and out of sight. Camping is prohibited within the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation portion of the park. Carry your own water; do not count on treating the sediment-heavy water found in the backcountry.

For organized events or unusual activities, consult the park's current rules and permit requirements. Confirm vehicle suitability before selecting Sage Creek.

Entrances, roads, and park maps

Badlands lies east of Rapid City. From I-90, Exit 131 leads toward the Northeast Entrance and Exit 110 at Wall leads toward the Pinnacles Entrance. From Highway 44, turn onto Highway 377 at Interior for the Interior Entrance.

Highway 240 is the paved North Unit route. Sage Creek Rim Road is gravel, so a clear-weather plan may need to change after rain. The South Unit is a separate destination; do not expect the North Unit loop to provide a through-route across it. Download the official Badlands maps before leaving reliable mobile coverage.

• Custer State Park: Continue west toward the Black Hills, where US Highway 16A provides access to the park.
• Wind Cave National Park: This regional stop lies near Hot Springs on US Highway 385, with another approach from Custer State Park via Highway 87.

Short walks, longer hikes, and learning stops

Window Trail is a 0.25-mile (0.4 km) round trip to a view through the Badlands Wall. Fossil Exhibit Trail is also 0.25 miles (0.4 km) round trip, with fossil replicas and displays along an accessible boardwalk. These are useful choices when you want a short walk between road stops.

Notch Trail is 1.5 miles (2.4 km) round trip and includes a log ladder and an exposed ledge. Avoid it if heights are a concern or heavy rain makes the route unsafe. Castle Trail is a longer option at 10 miles (16 km) round trip. Plan water and weather protection for the full return journey.

At Ben Reifel Visitor Center, ask about Junior Ranger booklets, exhibits, and the Fossil Preparation Lab's availability. White River Visitor Center offers another perspective through its Lakota heritage information. Wildlife watching adds interest to a road trip, but sightings should never determine how closely you approach an animal.

Visitor centers, water, and places to stay

Both visitor centers have ramped access, reserved parking, and accessible restrooms. Window and Fossil Exhibit trails have accessible boardwalks, while only the initial portions of some other trails provide comparable access. Check the full route before assuming it suits your mobility needs.

Cedar Pass Lodge provides cabins and the park's food-purchase location. Cedar Pass Campground has paid sites, including some with electric hookups. Confirm seasonal food and lodging service before relying on them.

Sage Creek Campground is more basic: it has accessible vault toilets but no water, and the surrounding ground can be rough. White River Visitor Center lists water and picnic facilities during its operating season. Carry sufficient drinking water when traveling beyond serviced areas.

Archaeological evidence documents people in the Badlands region for as long as 12,000 years. Lakota history and cultural connections remain central to understanding the landscape. The South Unit includes tribal land within the Pine Ridge Reservation.

The protected area held national monument status before becoming Badlands National Park in 1978. Its modern conservation history includes the restoration of bison to grasslands where they had once been widespread.

Prairie animals and their habitat

Bison graze the park's prairie and remain through winter, growing thick coats for cold conditions. Bighorn sheep, deer, and pronghorn are other large animals associated with the park. Look across the grasslands from a safe stopping place, and allow animals to cross roads without pressure from vehicles or people.
