Description
Balmorhea State Park is a popular natural wonder tucked in the foothills of the beautiful Davis Mountains in West Texas. The park is conveniently located off of Interstate 10 and is a convenient drive from cities such as El Paso, San Antonio and Austin. Since it was first established in 1968, Balmorhea State Park has been a popular destination for campers and nature lovers alike, as it offers a unique look at the West Texas landscape as well as recreational activities for all ages.
Covering over 46 acres of desert land, the park’s most notable feature is San Solomon Springs, a series of springs that feed the nearby Balmorhea lake. These springs are the source of life for a number of endangered species of fishes, turtles and aquatic invertebrates; the area is considered one of the most diverse aquatic ecosystems in Texas with some species found nowhere else in the world. Balmorhea Lake is also a popular spot for swimming, as the water is kept at a pleasant 74-78 degree temperature year-round.
Exploring the Balmorhea State Park doesn’t have to be limited to swimming, though. With over 19 miles of biking, hiking and nature trails, the park’s terrain gives visitors the perfect opportunity to explore and take in the breathtaking scenery of West Texas. Bird watchers are especially in luck, as the park is known to attract some of the rarest bird species in the region. The Davis Mountains also offer a great way for visitors to explore more of the area, as it’s a great spot for camping and has 13 visitor sites with RV hook-ups.
The Balmorhea State Park is a treasured spot in the desert, and is known for its history as well. Established in 1968 as part of The Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife, the park is listed on The National Register of Historic Places; it was here that the earliest inhabitants came to settle, and the park serves as a reminder of their legacy.
No matter your interests, Balmorhea State Park is an ideal spot for those looking for a unique experience amidst the natural beauty of West Texas. From the San Solomon Springs to the breathtaking vistas, it’s the perfect spot for swimming, camping, hiking, bird watching and more.
