Lake use and hunting seasons

Swimming is not available at Beaver Dam Lake. For a boat outing, use the public ramp and observe the electric-motor restriction. Hunting and trapping operate in regulated seasons, so check the IDNR closure notices and ask the office about the areas you intend to walk.

Pets and the archery range

Keep pets leashed; they are not permitted in campground cabins. At the archery range, bring your own bow and arrows, leave broadhead points out of your equipment and accompany any archer under age 16 with an adult.

Walking, fishing and picnics

IDNR lists approximately eight miles of trails spread around the lake, marsh and woods. Choose a route on the park map rather than treating that network total as one loop. For fishing, check the information kiosk for current catch and size limits. The launch has a dock for loading and unloading small boats.

Picnic tables, grills and the pavilions give non-anglers a separate reason to stop. The archery range is free to use with your own equipment and the stated safety restrictions. Do not plan around a rental boat from the closed concession.

Campground services and accessible docks

The trailer campground has electric pads, a dump station and a central shower building with flush toilets; individual campsites do not have water hookups. Tent camping occupies a separate area. Confirm seasonal water and shower availability before an overnight trip.

Accessible vault toilets are distributed through the park. IDNR identifies sites 27H and 28H as ADA campsites. Concrete approaches connect parking with the accessible fishing docks; the published distance from parking to those docks is about ten yards. These facilities do not imply that every woodland trail is accessible.

A lake with a long recreation history

From a private lake club to a state park

A Carlinville-area lake club used the lake for fishing and gatherings in the early 1890s. Illinois began acquiring the state-park property in 1947 with a 425-acre purchase. Later additions expanded the protected recreation area.

Woodland and wetland habitats

Oak and hickory woodland surrounds the recreation area, while the lake and marsh create different waterside habitats. The name comes from a beaver dam that helped form the lake; IDNR notes that beavers are now largely absent from the area.
