Visit responsibly

Respect posted barriers and the riparian vegetation. The district Red Flag Warning fire order prohibits campfires and tiki torches when those temporary restrictions apply. They remain active until park staff lift them; check the posted conditions before planning a cooked picnic.

From Chico, follow West Sacramento Avenue to River Road. Turn left for Big Chico Creek or right for Pine Creek; continuing straight reaches Indian Fishery. Irvine Finch River Access is just west of the Highway 32 Sacramento River bridge. From Interstate 5, Highway 32 from Orland reaches the river corridor near Hamilton City. Select the particular day-use area when navigating.

Nearby parks

In central Chico, Bidwell Mansion State Historic Park offers a visitor-center visit on Fridays and Saturdays; the mansion itself remains closed after the fire. Chico’s municipal Bidwell Park is a separate local option with trails and picnic areas. Check city trail and gate notices for the section you plan to enter.

Things to do

For a land-based visit, picnic, walk, and watch birds at Indian Fishery. Pine Creek is used for canoeing and kayaking. Irvine Finch’s launch ramp accesses the Sacramento River, while Big Chico Creek is a common takeout for rafts and tubes. Arrange an actual put-in, takeout, and return trip before setting off; a launch ramp does not establish a complete float itinerary.

About the park

The park protects riverine habitat that has become increasingly scarce. Its value includes the shaded plant communities beside the water, not only access to the Sacramento River.

Wildlife and habitats

Oaks and cottonwoods shade the riparian community, with elderberry, wild grape, blackberry, and wild rose in the understory. Indian Fishery’s oxbow lake is a place to watch for herons, turtles, and river otters; sightings remain a matter of chance.
