Biscayne National Park is a U.S. National Park located in southern Florida, south of Miami. The park preserves Biscayne Bay and its offshore reefs. The park covers 172,971 acres (270,3 sq mi; 700 sq km) and includes Elliott Key, the park's largest island and the first of the true Florida Keys.
In the early 20th century, the area included in the park was used as a base by pirates. Biscayne Bay was used as a haven for pirates and a base for their operations. Pirates would often loot ships that had run aground on the nearby reefs. In the early 1900s, the U.S. government began to take an interest in the area and Biscayne National Monument was established in 1968. The monument was later expanded to include all of Biscayne Bay and was redesignated as a national park in 1980.
