Brices Cross Roads National Battlefield Site is a one-acre Civil War memorial west of Baldwyn, Mississippi. It is a self-guided outdoor stop, administered by the National Park Service through Natchez Trace Parkway. Heat and insects matter even on a short visit

Bring drinking water and sun protection for Mississippi's hot, humid weather. Watch for fire ant hills while crossing the grass. Bees, wasps, or other insects can nest inside cannons, so do not reach into or put your face near the barrels.

Emergency phones are not readily available. Keep a way to seek help, and call 911 for an emergency when phone service is available.

Protect the memorial features

Do not sit or climb on monuments or cannons. These are historic and commemorative features, and climbing can cause injury as well as damage. Keep your visit within the public site and follow signs at partner tour stops.

Use the battlefield address, not the Tupelo mailing address

The site address is 260 Bethany Road, Guntown, MS 38849. From U.S. 45 at Baldwyn, take Mississippi 370 west for about six miles. The NPS directions distinguish this location from the Parkway headquarters in Tupelo.

Review the battlefield tour information before driving between interpretive stops. The one-acre memorial is a starting point for understanding the battle, not the boundary of every related visitor location.

Two options around Tupelo

Tombigbee State Park, near Tupelo, and Trace State Park, near Belden, are options when continuing south toward the Tupelo area. Check the road route and current park access before adding either to your day.

Read the ground and then follow the wider tour

Begin with the monument and wayside interpretation. Compare the small commemorative site with the broader troop movements described in the driving tour. This helps explain why the crossroads and surrounding roads mattered.

For more interpretation, consider the separate visitor center or ask Parkway staff about the battlefield story. Do not assume that staff or an indoor exhibition will be present beside the memorial.

Parking and mobility limits

The asphalt parking area has seven spaces, with none designated accessible. The NPS site has no public restrooms. NPS directs visitors to the Natchez Trace Parkway Visitor Center at 2680 Natchez Trace Parkway, Tupelo, MS 38804 for public toilets.

Paths include mowed grass, slopes, and drainage ditches. Even the paved approach to the central memorial requires crossing a ditch to reach its beginning. Read the mobility details before relying on a paved surface as evidence of a continuous accessible route.

Carry water and arrange any overnight stay elsewhere.

The battle of June 10, 1864

Confederate forces led by Nathan Bedford Forrest defeated the Union force commanded by Samuel Sturgis. The fighting formed part of efforts to protect or threaten railroad supply lines during the wider Union campaign. United States Colored Troops helped defend the retreat, allowing much of Sturgis's army to escape capture.
