California Citrus State Historic Park in Riverside explains the people and groves behind Southern California’s citrus industry. Walk the Knoll Trail beside the visitor center or join a guided grove tour. Fruit tasting depends on the season, and visitors cannot pick fruit independently.

See citrus as a working cultural landscape

The varietal grove beside the visitor center gives the Knoll Trail a clear focus. A guided tour adds the history of citrus in Riverside and lasts about 45 minutes. Choose the tour for interpretation rather than a guaranteed tasting.

Fees, hours, and seasonal access

Prepare for an outdoor tour

Bring water and sunscreen and wear comfortable shoes. Rain, excessive heat, high winds or staffing shortages can cancel a tour at short notice. Check the grove-tour conditions before traveling specifically for a tour.

Leave fruit on the trees

Keep out of working groves. Sampling is allowed only on interpretive tours, and taking fruit, plants or trees is prohibited.

Stay on designated paths. Dogs need a leash no longer than six feet and cannot enter the museum. Alcohol consumption and drone flights are prohibited.

Plan a tour or group visit

The regular grove tour does not require registration. Seasonal fruit availability controls tasting. A museum-and-trail visit therefore works differently from booking a fruit-picking activity.

Use the visitor address on Dufferin Avenue

Navigate to 9400 Dufferin Avenue, Riverside, and continue beyond the kiosk for the visitor center. The mailing office on Jackson Street is a different arrival point.

Nearby parks by road

Lake Perris State Recreation Area lies south of Riverside, reached via Highway 60 or I-215. Confirm its seasonal gate hours. Chino Hills State Park has a vehicle entrance at 4721 Sapphire Road, reached from the 91 Freeway and Highway 71 via Soquel Canyon Road. Its October–March hours are 8 a.m.–5 p.m.

Walk, learn and picnic

Follow the Knoll Trail through the varietal grove, use the trail’s QR stations for interpretation, or choose a picnic area near the gazebo. The visitor guide helps locate these activities.

Restrooms and accessible approaches

Restrooms are near the visitor center and between the Sunkist Center and gazebo. The brochure identifies accessible features including the visitor center, restrooms and concrete Knoll Trail. Approaches to the Sunkist Center and gazebo can require assistance. Confirm the route that meets your needs.

An outdoor museum of citrus agriculture

California State Parks presents citrus history through the experiences of the people who built the industry. That focus makes the groves part of a wider story about work and communities.

Trees, workers and California’s growth

In 1873, the U.S. Department of Agriculture sent two navel orange trees to Riverside resident Eliza Tibbets. The later expansion of citrus ranching drew growers and migrant and immigrant workers. Communities grew within a society divided by race and class. The park opened as a living historical museum in August 1993.

Look beyond the cultivated trees

Mockingbird Canyon’s dry wash shelters brush rabbits and bobcats. Watch for California quail and hummingbirds from public paths.
