Safety information

Prepare for changeable weather and terrain, and choose a route within everyone’s ability. The Bureau’s safety guidance identifies browntail moth caterpillar hairs as a rash and breathing hazard; exposure can persist in dry conditions after caterpillar season. Nearby parks

• Birch Point State Park is reached from Birch Point Beach Road off Route 73 south of Owls Head. Outside its Memorial Day–Labor Day vehicle season, visitors may park outside the gate without blocking it and walk in from 9 a.m. to sunset; facilities close for the off-season.
• Moose Point State Park is a Route 1 road stop between Belfast and Searsport. Its regular vehicle season ends October 1; off-season walk-in visits are allowed from 9 a.m. to sunset with parking outside the gate, without blocking it, and facilities closed.

Things to do

Choose a Mount Battie viewpoint visit or a hike toward Mount Megunticook. Birdwatching and snowshoeing are also listed park activities. Snow-dependent activities call for a conditions check rather than assuming that year-round day use guarantees suitable snow.

Facilities and accessibility

The park lists a campground, picnic area, group picnic shelter, RV dumping station, and electric-and-water hookups. Campground comfort stations have hot showers during the camping operation. Those services do not extend to the primitive winter camping offer, which has no water or amenities.
