Ebey's Landing National Historical Reserve preserves a working rural landscape around Coupeville on central Whidbey Island, Washington. Farms, homes, public trails, and three state parks share the area. The reserve is larger than Ebey's Landing State Park, and much of its land remains private.

Wind, moving logs, and unstable bluffs

Avoid the waterline during stormy weather: waves can move heavy driftwood. Wet or windy conditions can make bluff routes hazardous. Stay back from edges and follow closures. Dress for changing island weather and carry water even when mainland conditions look mild.

Keep to public access routes

Do not enter farm fields or private homes. An apparently empty field may contain a sensitive crop. Follow posted routes through this mixed-ownership landscape, keep dogs leashed, and pack out litter and pet waste. Do not feed deer, raccoons, coyotes, or other wildlife.

Separate ferry and overnight bookings

The Port Townsend–Coupeville ferry recommends vehicle reservations. Confirm the crossing schedule and booking rules before driving to the terminal. Camping at Fort Casey and Fort Ebey uses state park booking channels. Ebey's Landing State Park has no camping.

Three approaches to central Whidbey Island

From the north, SR 20 reaches the island over Deception Pass and continues through Oak Harbor toward Coupeville. From the south, use the Mukilteo–Clinton ferry and SR 525, which becomes SR 20. The Port Townsend–Coupeville ferry provides an approach from the Olympic Peninsula.

Use the official trail map to distinguish public routes from private land. Free parking is listed beside the Coupeville Library off Alexander Street and at the Main Street park-and-ride. Island Transit offers fare-free travel, but check the route and timetable for your destination.

Two close parks within the reserve

Fort Casey Historical State Park, near the ferry landing, and Fort Ebey State Park, beside the Kettles trail area, are nearby choices reached by local island roads. Both lie within the broader reserve. Pick the one that fits your arrival route or overnight base.

Choose a coastal walk or a shorter prairie outing

The Bluff Loop is about 3.5 miles round trip from the state park trailhead. Starting elsewhere can make the outing longer. Check the Trust Board's route descriptions before choosing a start point.

From the Cottage trailhead, the Prairie Ridge route reaches the Jacob and Sarah Ebey House in about 0.3 miles one way. It offers a shorter way to see the farm landscape. A walk through Coupeville or a museum stop can add context without extending a bluff hike.

Visitor information, toilets, and overnight options

Restrooms are listed at Ebey's Landing State Park, the Cottage trailhead, and the library-adjacent parking lot. Bring drinking water.

Pratt Cottage provides maps and visitor information. Camping is available through Fort Casey and Fort Ebey, while the Coupeville visitor information service can help locate other accommodation. Confirm individual opening dates and availability.

Prairie Overlook, Prairie Wayside, and Pratt Cottage are listed as accessible. The reserve's dirt and gravel trails may not meet every mobility need. Consult the accessibility guidance before selecting a route.

About the historical reserve

A landscape shaped by the Lower Skagit people and later settlement

Lower Skagit people managed prairie habitats for thousands of years. Settler land claims and the Point Elliott Treaty of 1855 brought displacement and lasting changes in ownership. Today's working fields and historic buildings preserve parts of that layered history.

The Trust Board coordinates a partnership of the National Park Service, Washington State Parks, Island County, and the Town of Coupeville.

Observe the shore and fields without disturbance

Birdwatching at Crockett Lake is one way to observe the reserve's wildlife. Deer, raccoons, and coyotes also occur. Use distance and binoculars, and keep pets from disturbing animals.
