Description
Hickory Run State Park is a rugged, heavily forested park tucked away in the Pocono Mountains of eastern Pennsylvania. Boasting nearly 15,000 acres of land, the park is located in Carbon, Monroe and Luzerne Counties. The park, managed by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) is a recreational haven, offering nearly endless opportunities to explore the great outdoors.
Hickory Run is a diverse and vast park, full of wetlands, woodlands and rocky terrain. The boulder field, a National Natural Landmark, is one of the most unique features the park has to offer, stretching for 15 acres across the park and featuring a wide array of volcanic rock. The magnificent, eye-catching boulders are 39 million years old, deposited during the Ice Age.
The park is full of unique wildlife and boasts 80 species of birds and over 30 species of mammals. Commonly seen animals in the park include coyote, woodchucks, flying squirrels, brown bats, beaver, species of salamanders and other amphibians. As far as wildlife interactivity, Hickory Run State Park offers two separate wildlife rehabilitator centers, one of which is dedicated solely to opossums.
If hiking is your cup of tea, Hickory Run has no shortage of trails to follow. In the Northeastern part of the park is Hickory Run State Forest, covering 9,273 acres and boasting 17 miles of trails that range from easy to difficult. Hickory Run State Park also has a campground and picnic areas, with charcoal grills, restrooms and running water.
