Lost Maples State Natural Area is a state-owned, 2,906-acre nature park located in the north central part of Bandera County, Texas, about 37 miles (60 km) east of San Antonio. The park features a unique and spectacular stand of Uvalde bigtooth maples, attracting thousands of visitors in the fall when the maples put on a brilliant autumnal display of red and yellow leaves.

The park offers plentiful hiking trails, spectacular views of the scenic Sabinal River Canyon, a variety of wildlife, and several birdwatching trails and bird blinds. The Uvalde bigtooth maples are the chief attraction of the park and put on an especially brilliant autumn display in late October and early November when their leaves turn vivid red and yellow. Other plants featured in the park’s habitats include Texas madrone, Arizona cypress, and juniper.

Though relatively small in size, Lost Maples offers a wide variety of recreational activities, including camping, hiking, picnicking, bird watching, and fishing. The park also has 8 miles (13 km) of trails for hikers, bikers, and horseback riders, as well as a 1.4-mile (2.3 km) nature trail for visitors to observe the park’s abundant plant and animal life. The park also offers camping, with 22 sites for tent and RV camping and 5 primitive backcountry sites.

The park also offers guided tours of the Uvalde bigtooth maples, educational programs, and special events such as star parties. The park also features a view of the night sky, and is an International Dark Sky Park and an Audubon Texas International Important Bird Area.
