Description
Lovers Key State Park is a 712-acre (2.89 km2) state park located just before the southernmost tip of Fort Myers Beach, Florida. This state park is part of the Greater Fort Myers Beach Area, with Sanibel Island and its beaches to the north and Bonita Springs to the south. The park was formerly known as Carl E. Johnson State Recreation Area, and is still commonly referred to as Lovers Key. The park's four barrier islands, Black Island, Inner Keewaydin Island, Lovers Key (the biggest one in the park) and Inner Long Key, are connected by a series of canals and boardwalks. It is the only Recognized Tropical Hardwood Hammock designated as a state park.
The barrier islands serve as a refuge for wildlife, particularly the West Indian Manatee, which is the state marine mammal. Other wildlife that can be found in the park include bald eagles, osprey, bobcat, otter, marsh rabbit, bald eagles and a variety of wading birds. The park also has a wide variety of plants, including red mangrove trees, sea grapes, wax myrtle, and wild olive trees.
In addition to the natural beauty of the barrier islands, Lovers Key State Park also offers a range of recreational activities, including boating, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, swimming and sunbathing. The park also provides a number of amenities and facilities, including a four-mile multi-purpose trail for bicycling/hiking, beach wheelchair, pavilions, and a concession stand. The park also has picnic areas and a playground for children.
Lovers Key State Park is a popular tourist destination and has become a popular spot for weddings. The beach and boardwalks serve as a beautiful backdrop for any occasion. Visitors can park their cars in the lot, and ferry service is available from Fort Myers Beach. Additionally, boat launching and fishing excursions are available from the park's marina. Guided eco-tours and group educational programs on the local environment and wildlife are also offered.
Lovers Key State Park is run and maintained by the Florida State Parks, who plan and provide a variety of programs to engage and educate visitors on the natural and cultural history of the park. The park is open seven days a week, from 8 a.m. to sunset.
