Description
Rouge National Urban Park is one of the largest urban parks in North America, stretching across an expansive 79.1 square kilometers in Ontario, Canada. Established in 2015, it is the only national park within a large city, situated at the doorstep of Canada’s largest metropolis, Toronto. The park is home to an array of rare and beautiful plants and animals, making it a great destination for outdoor activities such as camping, fishing, canoeing, and kayaking.
While hiking and biking, visitors get up close to the park’s array of wildlife, including deer, foxes, turtles, and beavers. Rich habitats and endangered species such as the Chimney Swift, Blanding’s Turtle, Butternut tree, and American Ginseng also abound. History enthusiasts can also explore the historic sites of the ancestral homeland of the Indigenous people, including First Nations, Metis, and Inuit.
The park also offers breathtaking views of the natural landscapes, overlooking wild rivers, dense forests, meadows, and marshes, as well as heritage farmlands. Alongside its eye-catching scenery, a variety of recreational activities are available, such as birdwatching, wildlife photography, geocaching, and rides in the park’s working wagon. The Rouge Valley Visitor Centre also serves as an educational facility, providing interactive displays and panels that inform visitors about the history, culture, and wildlife of the park.
For a truly unique experience, visitors can also stay in the park’s primitive cabin, which offers a secluded getaway from the city. Over 33 kilometers of trails have also been added for visitors to explore the park and its vast array of outdoor activities. These trails range from easy to hard and are suitable for walkers, bikers, and families with young children.
To ensure that Rouge National Urban Park can be enjoyed for generations to come, efforts have been made to limit any interruptions to nature by providing special pathways for wildlife and restoring the safeguarding of habitats for endangered species. With such a variety of activities and stunning landscapes, Rouge National Urban Park is the perfect destination for anyone eager to explore and experience the beauty of nature.
