Description
Sequoia National Park is a protected wildlife area and national park located in California. It was established in 1890, making it one of the oldest national parks in the United States. It is the second-oldest national park in the lower 48 states. The park is famous for its towering groves of colossal sequoias, the Earth’s largest trees. The sequoia groves offer views of grandeur that can’t be found anywhere else in the world.
The park covers 404,063 acres, making it larger than Rhode Island or Delaware. It extends across both the Sierra Nevada mountain range and the southern part of the Cascade Range. Within the park, there are over 800 miles of hiking trails, ranging from easy to strenuous, including trails to Mount Whitney, California’s highest peak. In addition to the giant sequoias which stand among 10,000-foot-high peaks, visitors can also take in surreal meadows and crystal-clear rivers.
In addition to the natural beauty the park is home to, visitors can also make a stop at Big Baldy Mountain to take in a panoramic view of the park. There are also plenty of campsites, lodges, and lookout spots located throughout the park for visitors to choose from. Backcountry campers can find plenty of sites, but a permit is required for overnight stays.
Sequoia National Park has a fascinating history. The first Europeans to set foot in the area were Spanish explorers in the 1800s. In the late 1800s, a bear hunter named Hale Tharp reportedly found some of the park’s first sequoias. This eventually led to the park’s creation in 1890 by President Benjamin Harrison.
Today, Sequoia National Park remains one of the most popular national parks in the United States, drawing over 1 million visitors annually. Visitors can stay safe and enjoy the park’s stunning wildlife by staying on authorized trails and pathways, or by purchasing a backcountry permit for more adventurous activities. The park also offers a variety of educational programs and interpretive tours designed to help visitors understand and appreciate the natural and cultural world around them.
