Heat and coastal conditions

Bring drinking water, sun protection, and a hat. Take breaks in the shade. Storms can change access and conditions quickly; follow posted closures rather than assuming that round-the-clock common-area access guarantees access to every facility.

Respect the memorials and recreation rules

Camping, ground fires, and glass containers are prohibited. Overnight parking is also prohibited, except for emergency repairs that cannot be completed safely in one day. Keep bicycles, scooters, and similar wheeled recreation on permitted concrete paths, sidewalks, and roads. These activities are prohibited at the memorials and several other protected locations. Check the park-specific rules before planning an activity.

Events and group use

Groups larger than 100 participants require a reservation or permit arrangement. Non-NPS events in the visitor center theater require approved special use authorization. The theater is limited to 120 spectators. Contact staff before organizing an event; ordinary sightseeing and reserved facility use are different activities.

Finding the park in Garapan

The park lies on Saipan's western shore beside downtown Garapan in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, a U.S. commonwealth. From Beach Road, turn onto Micro Beach Road for the parking lot described in the official directions. Visitors staying in Garapan can also approach on foot. From elsewhere on the island, use a taxi or rental car.

Nearby parks on Saipan

Kilili Beach Park and Susupe Beach Park are other public park stops along Saipan's western shoreline, south of Garapan. Reach them by road on the same island. They are Commonwealth recreation sites, with their own rules and facilities.

Memorial visits and a coastal walk

Start at the visitor center during its opening hours, then continue to the memorials. This order gives you historical context before spending time at the commemorative sites. Keep the memorial areas quiet and give other visitors space.

For an outdoor visit, follow the park's scenic pathways and take time to observe plants and birds. The Beach Road Pathway continues through Garapan toward the island's western beach parks. Choose your turning point for the heat and the time you have available.

Visitor facilities

The visitor center includes a museum and bookstore. Restrooms are available in the park. Food and bottled water can be bought from shops and restaurants within walking distance. Ask staff about a specific route or facility if access needs affect your plans; do not assume every historic structure is open for entry.

About the memorial and its setting

A living memorial to the Marianas Campaign

Established on August 18, 1978, the roughly 133-acre park commemorates people who died during the Marianas Campaign of World War II. The Commonwealth owns the land and manages it in conjunction with the National Park Service as an affiliated area. Historic Japanese military structures remain within the park.

A remnant wetland

Around 30 acres of wetland and mangrove forest provide habitat for birds, insects, plants, and crustaceans. Observe from public paths. The presence of wetland habitat does not mean there is a maintained visitor route through every part of it.
