Anaconda Smoke Stack State Park is an industrial-history viewing stop in Anaconda, Montana. Visitors see the 585-foot brick stack from a separate interpretive area near Goodman Park. The public visit does not include walking up to the stack or entering it. Plan time for the signs and photographs, then continue elsewhere for a longer outdoor outing.

Stay in the public viewing area

Do not approach the stack across the former smelter property. Follow signs and access boundaries. The surrounding industrial site has a history of contamination and cleanup; the EPA site background explains why controlled access matters.

Respect the historic site

View and photograph the structure from the designated area. Leave the former industrial property undisturbed. Discharging weapons is prohibited throughout the year. Read posted instructions before using the viewpoint.

Find the viewpoint near Goodman Park

The public interpretive area is near the junction of Park Street, also MT Highway 1, and Monroe Street on Anaconda's eastern side. The listed site address is 100 Smelter Road. Use the FWP site directions to distinguish public access from the stack property.

The manager's mailing office is in Butte. It is not the entrance for this visit. Arrange any special access question directly with the manager rather than navigating to the structure itself.

Nearby parks by road

• Lost Creek State Park: Follow Lost Creek Road north of Anaconda for a separate canyon outing. Snow can affect access in October and November; check conditions before driving there.
• Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site: Continue toward Deer Lodge on the I-90 corridor. Its visitor entrance is at Grant Circle on the town's northwest side.

Read the landscape through the exhibits

Begin with the interpretive panels, then look back toward the stack to connect its scale with the smelter's role in Anaconda. Photography and historical interpretation are the main activities at this stop. Choose another park for a walking route or a longer nature visit.

An outdoor interpretive stop

The public site provides interpretive displays and an information kiosk. It has no visitor center or onsite staff. Bring what you need for an outdoor stop and contact the manager ahead of time if a particular facility or access feature determines your visit.

About the surviving stack

From working smelter to historic landmark

The Anaconda Copper Company completed the stack in 1919. The smelter ceased operating in 1980, while the stack survived as a record of that industry. The structure is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The wider smelter site entered the federal Superfund program in 1983.
