Fire, road, and animal precautions

Follow the cooking-only restriction above even if your campsite has a fire ring. Drivers and cyclists share Park Road 1C; its speed limit is 30 mph. The statewide screwworm alert asks visitors to report wildlife with suspicious wounds or maggots to park staff. If a pet has those signs, do not move the animal; contact a veterinarian.

Protect recovering habitat

Keep pets on a leash no longer than 6 feet; pets are prohibited in park buildings. Leave plants, animals, and artifacts in place, and do not feed or harass wildlife. The Texas state park rules explain these requirements.

Bastrop often reaches capacity. Reserve a day pass or overnight stay through Texas State Parks reservations or call 512-389-8900 to secure entry. When the pool is operating, admission to the park or a campsite does not guarantee a pool place: pool tickets are separate and first come, first served.

Walk the forest and choose a fishing destination

The park has seven miles of hiking trails and lends fishing equipment. Lake Mina is the practical fishing choice identified in the current lake notice. Little Alum Creek Lake requires a 5-mile round-trip hike on Heron Hideaway Trail; do not treat it as a drive-up fishing stop. A license is not required when fishing from shore in a Texas state park.

For a history-focused visit, stop at the interpretive center or look at the park's CCC buildings. Cycling or driving Park Road 1C offers another way to see forested and recovering sections of the Lost Pines.

Camping, cabins, and access support

The pool has ADA entry options when operating. Children age 14 and under must enter its pool area with a responsible adult age 18 or older.

A protected part of the Lost Pines

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department manages Bastrop as part of the Lost Pines landscape. Wildfire damaged 96 percent of the park in 2011; today's visit includes seeing the forest recover.

CCC craftsmanship

The state acquired land for the park from 1933 to 1935, and Bastrop opened in 1937. CCC construction and landscape work helped it earn National Historic Landmark status in 1997.

Pine-oak habitats

Pines, oaks, shrubs, and grassland create habitat for white-tailed deer, armadillos, and pileated woodpeckers. The Lost Pines' seasonally moist sandy soils also provide critical habitat for the endangered Houston toad.
