Description
Pedernales Falls State Park is a 5,212-acre natural oasis located near Johnson City, Texas. The beautiful park boasts some of the most breathtaking views in the Hill Country and has become a popular destination for sightseeing, swimming, hiking, camping, and much more.
The park gets its name from the Pedernales River, which creates a long line of cascading waterfalls as it flows through the park. Climb up the limestone steps to take in panoramic views of the falls and surrounding canyons. Keep an eye out for the diverse wildlife that inhabit the park, which includes white-tailed deer, armadillos, turkey, and coyotes.
The Pedernales River has formed the park’s striking blue-green pools, which are the perfect spot for a family picnic or a day of fishing, swimming, and kayaking. Jump in for a refreshing swim in the depths of Hamilton Pool. The grotto-like natural pool is fed by a 50-foot waterfall, making it an unforgettable place to explore.
The park is also home to a variety of trails, ranging from easy to moderate in difficulty. Stretch your legs and take a tour of the Enchanted Rock Loop, the most popular trail in the park. Gaze up at the giant pink boulder, a stunning dome of exposed granite. Hikers won’t want to miss the stunning views of the Pedernales Falls from this trail.
Since 1971, Pedernales Falls State Park has been a place for getting back to nature. The park was established to protect and preserve the fragile landscape, steeped in lush plants and abundant wildlife. And, no trip to the park is complete without a visit to the park’s butterfly garden, home to an array of colorful species.
The park is open daily, but hours and fees vary by season. Pedernales Falls State Park is pet friendly, but pets are not allowed in the river or pools. So, if you’re looking for a secluded escape within the rolling hills and crystal-clear waters of the Hill Country, Pedernales Falls State Park is the perfect outdoor retreat.
