Bear Brook State Park in Allenstown, New Hampshire, suits a day of forest trails, pond-side recreation, or archery. Its roughly 40-mile trail network serves hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians. Choose your arrival point carefully: day use, Beaver Pond camping, and Bear Hill cabins have different addresses and seasonal services.

Start with the official trail map to select a route and a return point. The park also has a 15-target archery range and a universally accessible four-target practice range; bring your own equipment.

Fees, hours, and seasonal access

Prepare for an unstaffed trail outing

Carry water, a light, extra food, and weather-appropriate layers. Not all trails return to the same place. Choose a route before starting and tell someone your plans. For swimming, use designated swimline areas where and when day-use fees apply; swimming is at your own risk.

Share the trails and protect the ponds

Keep trail dogs leashed and attended, and watch for other trail users. Camp only in designated camping areas. Under the state park rules, alcohol is prohibited at inland beaches and their recreation areas. Watercraft are excluded from designated swimming areas, and boats and flotation equipment are prohibited in Archery Pond.

Day-use reservations can be made up to 30 days ahead. Walk-in parking is first come, first served, so a busy weekend may fill. Use the booking links on the park website for the correct day-use or overnight facility, and check the applicable season before reserving.

Nearby parks

Northwood Meadows State Park is at 755 First NH Turnpike in Northwood; its lake has been drained for dam work, so consider it for a land-based outing. Pawtuckaway State Park has its main address at 128 Mountain Road in Nottingham. Both are separate road destinations in the surrounding region.

Choose a mapped trail or a seasonal pond visit

The trail system crosses forest, marshes, bogs, and summits. Use the map to plan a walk or ride that returns to your chosen access point. For a pond visit, check posted beach conditions before entering the water and keep boating separate from swimming areas.

Campground and cabin facilities

In season, Beaver Pond Campground provides tent and RV sites, a store, showers, and a camper dump station. Bear Hill cabins are walk-in from a drop-off area and have no electricity. These are seasonal overnight choices; recreation access outside their operating dates does not make their services available.

The museum complex includes the Richard Diehl Civilian Conservation Corps Museum and other museums in historic CCC buildings. Check museum access separately from trail access.

Forest and wetland habitats

Bear Brook’s landscape includes heavily forested ground, marshes, bogs, and ponds. A mapped trail outing lets you explore these different habitats without treating the whole park as one continuous loop.
