Summer afternoon winds can build 3–4-foot waves and catch small boats. Everyone aboard human-powered watercraft must wear a USCG-approved life jacket. Shore roads have soft shale that becomes difficult even for four-wheel-drive vehicles when wet.

Visit responsibly

Do not bring OHVs, ATVs, or dirt bikes into the park. Fireworks and collecting wood are prohibited. Under the booking notice’s Stage II rules, liquid-petroleum or LPG devices with an on/off control require three feet of cleared space around and above them. Smoking is restricted to an enclosed vehicle or building.

Reservations and permits

Check the authorized campground booking page and call the park about the intended site. The main page’s seasonal reservation dates differ from the booking provider’s wider online window. A late arrival cannot reach a campsite after the gate closes.

El Malpais National Monument has a visitor center at I-40 exit 85 near Grants, with park access from NM-117 or NM-53. El Morro National Monument is farther along NM-53, reached from I-40 exit 81. Both are road excursions from the lake; choose the intended entrance before setting out.

Things to do

For a short walk, the park lists a quarter-mile hiking trail. Birdwatching and picnicking also suit a visit without a boat. Paddlers need to match their plans to wind and lake conditions, then confirm launch access with staff. The state life-jacket requirements apply on the water.
