Indiana Dunes National Park follows the southern shore of Lake Michigan in northwestern Indiana. Its beaches are only part of the visit: trails also cross wetlands, oak savanna, and forest. Choose a specific beach or trailhead before driving, because park sites are spread across several communities. Indiana Dunes State Park is a separate destination with separate admission rules.

Fees, hours, and seasonal access

Buy the appropriate pass through the visitor center or the channels on the official fees page. A parking lot without an entrance booth does not mean the national park visit is free.

Treat Lake Michigan as open water

Stay out of the lake when rip-current warnings, high waves, or bacterial advisories are posted. Conditions can change independently of the air temperature. Check the beach conditions and swimming guidance before entering. West Beach normally has lifeguard services during the summer season, but confirm staffing rather than assuming a guard is present.

Keep children close at the water's edge. In winter, view shelf ice from land; hidden gaps and thin areas make walking on it dangerous. On trails, bring water and sun protection, avoid brushing against plants, and check for ticks afterward.

Keep to marked dune routes

Walking outside designated routes damages dune vegetation. Leave rocks, shells, fossils, and plants where you find them. Glass containers and wood or charcoal fires are prohibited on the beaches. Use designated picnic grills where provided.

Pets must remain on a leash no longer than 6 feet. Pinhook Bog excludes pets, while its upland trail permits them. West Beach restricts pets in the lifeguarded swimming area during the summer season. Check signs at each site and remove pet waste. Do not let a dog chase shoreline birds.

Camping and restricted-access walks

Reserve a campsite before arrival through Recreation.gov. The national park's campground page describes Dunewood and other camping locations. Confirm the individual site's vehicle limits and booking dates. An entrance pass does not secure a campsite.

Pinhook Bog requires advance approval and an authorized staff escort. Its upland trail is a separate option for an independent walk. Mount Baldy's summit also requires an authorized staff-led visit. Check program availability if either restricted area is central to your plans.

Choose your destination before setting navigation

The Indiana Dunes Visitor Center is at 1215 IN-49, Porter, IN 46304. It is an orientation stop, not the entrance to every beach. The national park stretches along about 15 miles of lakeshore, so identify the exact trailhead or beach parking area you intend to use.

Paper trail maps are available at the visitor centers and trailhead kiosks. Use the official hiking guide to connect a route with its starting point. Summer weekend beach lots can fill early. Keep an alternative national park stop in mind rather than parking on an unapproved roadside or in a residents-only lot.

• Indiana Dunes State Park: Follow State Road 49 to its northern end for this separately managed lakeshore park. National park admission does not cover its gate fee.
• Warren Dunes State Park: For an onward trip into southwestern Michigan, use the entrance at 12032 Red Arrow Highway in Sawyer.

Match the trail to the ground underfoot

• Calumet Dunes Trail: A 0.5-mile paved walk offers a shorter introduction to an old dune ridge.
• Dune Ridge Trail: This 0.7-mile route is rated moderate and looks over wetlands and forest.
• Cowles Bog Trail: The featured 4.7-mile hike is moderate to rugged. Allow for sand and dune climbing rather than treating it as an ordinary flat walk.
• Great Marsh: The trail system includes a separate paved approach to an observation deck, useful for viewing wetland habitat.

Mount Baldy's beach route is distinct from the closed summit route. It descends steep loose sand, and you must climb back up to leave. Keep your load manageable and use the marked beach access rather than following footprints onto the dune.

Birdwatching adds another reason to visit outside beach weather. Wetlands, woodland edges, and the lakeshore offer different habitats. Bring binoculars and remain on the trail instead of moving closer to nesting or feeding birds.

Beach services, campsites, and accessible options

Beach parking areas provide restrooms and drinking water, but confirm seasonal service at your chosen stop. West Beach has a bathhouse and summer shower facilities. Food vendors operate at selected locations; their presence on a particular day is not guaranteed.

Dunewood campsites cost USD 25 per site per night, separate from park admission. The campground has restrooms, showers, shared potable-water points, and an RV dump station. Individual sites have no electric or water hookups. Some RV sites have length limits, and other sites are for tents only.

Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk provides paved access and a pavilion. Its beach mat is seasonal. West Beach has an accessible route toward the sand and a beach wheelchair during the staffed season. NPS identifies the Cypress Log Cabin as lodging operated by an authorized business inside the park. Nearby communities offer other accommodation. Confirm availability with the operator; a listing does not establish that a room is open for your dates.

A long campaign to protect the dunes

Protection followed decades of debate over conservation and industrial development. Botanist Henry Cowles drew attention to the dune ecosystems, while advocates including Dorothy Buell and Senator Paul Douglas helped advance federal protection. Congress authorized Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore in 1966. That history explains why protected land and developed communities sit close together.

Several habitats within a narrow lakeshore region

White-tailed deer, coyotes, amphibians, and many kinds of birds use the park's varied habitats. Lake Michigan moderates local conditions, while wetlands, dunes, and forest provide different shelter and food.
