Ojców National Park in Lesser Poland Voivodeship, Poland - map and visitor information

Research checked: . Check linked official notices before travel.

Ojców National Park brings limestone cliffs, caves, and castle ruins together in the Prądnik Valley in southern Poland. Ojcowski Park Narodowy separates free outdoor access from paid attractions. A valley walk and a cave visit therefore need different plans, especially outside the caves' operating seasons.

Limestone scenery above and below ground

  • Brama Krakowska: this natural rock gateway stands in the Prądnik Valley, with Jurassic limestone pillars shaped by erosion.
  • Łokietek Cave: passages and chambers lie above the valley floor. Entry is on a scheduled guided visit.
  • Ciemna Cave: the cave and its surrounding archaeological site connect the landscape with Neanderthal occupation.
  • Ojców castle ruins: a separate paid stop adds cultural history to a walk through the valley.

Use the designated routes into caves and cliffs

Follow the marked paths and the cave guide's instructions. Łokietek Cave includes steps and narrow passages; a cave ticket should not be treated as evidence of step-free access. The park prohibits climbing and cave exploration outside designated places. Carry some cash: card and phone payments can fail at attraction desks and parking meters.

Stay on the marked paths

Do not pick plants or mushrooms, disturb animals, or light fires. Dogs can accompany walks under the park's conditions; follow the published leash and muzzle requirements. Check individual attraction restrictions before taking a dog inside. The park access rules also distinguish ordinary walking from organized events that need permission.

Know which visits need advance arrangements

Park attraction tickets are sold at the attraction desks, not online. Łokietek Cave uses guided departures every 30 minutes without reservations. Organized groups of more than 10 people must arrange a licensed park guide and reserve Ciemna Cave in advance. Group visits to the nature exhibition also require booking. Use the official visitor information for the relevant phone numbers and reservation channels.

Start in Ojców or at a designated parking area

The park follows the Prądnik and Sąspówka valleys in Lesser Poland. Ojców is the main reference point for the valley attractions, while Pieskowa Skała is a separate destination within the area. The Pod Zamkiem lot in Ojców fills early on busy days. Złota Góra provides another starting point, about 1.5 km from the center on the black/green marked route. Use the park's mapped routes rather than navigating to an arbitrary point inside the boundary.

Nearby landscape parks

Park Krajobrazowy Dolinki Krakowskie includes valleys around Będkowice and Bolechowice, reached by local roads on the southwestern side of the Ojców area. Dłubniański Park Krajobrazowy follows the Dłubnia valley toward Trzyciąż and Iwanowice, with separate village access points to the east and north.

Build a visit around one or two stops

Choose an outdoor valley walk for limestone scenery, then add an attraction whose season fits your visit. Brama Krakowska makes the geology visible without an underground tour. Łokietek Cave has several chambers within a 320 m cave system; Ciemna Cave adds an archaeological context rather than simply another rock formation.

Pieskowa Skała Castle has its own visitor arrangements. Do not assume that a ticket for the Ojców ruins covers that castle or the caves.

Parking, exhibitions, and access needs

Attraction desks and park exhibitions support visits in Ojców, but each attraction has its own hours. Coaches and vehicles over 3.5 tonnes cannot use the Pod Zamkiem lot in Ojców; coaches use Złota Góra instead. Some sites have physical access limitations. Consult the building-by-building accessibility information when an indoor visit forms an essential part of the day.

A landscape shaped by water and protection

From conservation proposals to a national park

The national park was established on January 14, 1956, after decades of conservation efforts. Its caves preserve a much longer human history: archaeological evidence from Ciemna records Neanderthal occupation during the last glacial period.

Bats and the wooded valleys

Bats are central to the park's identity and appear in its emblem. The authority records 21 bat species in the park, including the lesser horseshoe bat. The valleys and woods also support roe deer and beavers. Observe wildlife without entering closed caves or leaving the routes.
