Allow for a colder and windier mountain
The massif has colder conditions, more precipitation, and sometimes strong winds compared with the Saguenay lowlands. Prepare for the route's actual elevation and weather. A winter shuttle ride does not remove the need to walk or ski after arrival.
The route from the Vallée des Fantômes drop-off toward Pic Dubuc climbs about 320 m over 3 km. Allow for the return journey and the booked transport schedule.
Use the correct access permission
Backcountry access is authorized in winter only and requires its own access permit. Stay away from moose wintering areas. Dogs are restricted to authorized locations. Recreational drones are prohibited.
Book winter transport and overnight access together

Public transit to Saint-Fulgence does not reach the park entrance: the listed stop is about 17 km away. Arrange the remaining transfer before relying on transit.
Other parks on a regional road trip
Parc national du Fjord-du-Saguenay has several separate sectors; choose one before planning the road approach and check its current closures. Parc national des Grands-Jardins is reached by Route 381 from the La Baie side or Saint-Urbain. Neither substitutes for checking Monts-Valin's own road-work restrictions.

The discovery and visitor center provides information, reservations, an exhibit, and seasonal equipment rental. The building has mobility access. Ask separately about the trail or accommodation route, which can involve substantial travel beyond the center.

From a conservation proposal to a national park
Québec created the Monts-Valin conservation park on September 19, 1996. It became a national park under Québec's designation changes in 2001. The protected massif records earlier forestry and recreational use.
