Arches National Park is a U.S. National Park in eastern Utah. The park is adjacent to the Colorado River, 4 miles (6 km) north of Moab in Grand County. It is home to more than 2,000 natural sandstone arches, including the world-famous Delicate Arch, in addition to a variety of unique geological resources and formations. It contains the highest density of natural arches in the world.
The park is located on the Colorado Plateau, a geologic province that is characterized by thick layers of sedimentary rock. The rock in the park was deposited over millions of years by rivers and oceans, and later uplifted and eroded by wind and rain. The arches, fins, and other rock formations in the park are a result of different processes, including erosion, weathering, and gravity.
The park has an area of 76,679 acres (309.78 km2) and was established as a national park on April 12, 1929. It is Utah's oldest national park and was the first national park in the United States to be designated as a national park. The park receives an average of 1.3 million visitors per year.
The park has a variety of features, including arches, fins, pinnacles, domes, and canyons. The arches in the park range in height from 3 feet (0.91 m) to 300 feet (91 m). The park also contains several hiking trails, campsites, and picnic areas.
