The Ashton to Tetonia Trail follows a former railroad across eastern Idaho for 29.6 miles. Idaho Parks and Recreation manages this route for walking, cycling, and horseback riding. Choose a trailhead and a manageable section before setting out; the visitor center address is not a substitute for your chosen parking area.

Fees, hours, and seasonal access

Prepare for a long, exposed outing

Carry water, food, and a first-aid kit. Keep your speed low around other users and at gates. Vegetation is overgrown in places between Fall River Trestle and the Grainville parking area, so leave extra room to see the path ahead.

Share the route

Keep pets on a leash no longer than six feet. Class 3 e-bikes, ATVs, OHVs, and motor vehicles are prohibited. Follow posted restrictions when maintenance affects a section.

Group use

Contact the park about a Group Use Permit before organizing a group activity. Plan overnight accommodation elsewhere rather than treating the trail as a campground.

Trailheads between Ashton and Tetonia

Use the official trail map to locate parking and trestles. Access options include Marysville, Grainville, France, Lamont, Judkins, Felt, and Tetonia. Mark your start and turnaround point before leaving your vehicle. A full one-way trip also needs a return-transport plan.

Nearby parks

From the Ashton end, Harriman State Park and Henrys Lake State Park are separate road trips north through the US 20 corridor. Harriman's entrance is on Green Canyon Road in Island Park. Henrys Lake's entrance is on East 5100 North. Check each park's access rules before adding it to your trip.

Pick a section for your activity

Walk or ride between a parking area and a trestle for a defined turnaround point. The route has paved portions as well as other surfaces, so choose a bicycle for the section you intend to cover. Toilets and the visitor center

Vault toilets are at Marysville and Judkins parking areas. Indoor restrooms are at the visitor center, subject to its opening schedule. Carry your water instead of depending on a service at each trailhead.

About the former railroad

A rail connection across the valley

The Oregon Short Line, a Union Pacific subsidiary, built this railroad connection in 1912. It linked Ashton with communities farther south through Tetonia and toward Victor. The surviving rail corridor now carries recreation traffic rather than trains.

Birdwatching along the route

Birdwatching is one of the trail's listed activities. Pause where you can watch without blocking walkers, riders, or horses. Let the day's conditions determine what you see rather than planning around a promised sighting.
