Watch your footing in the rooms

Low doorways, steps and uneven surfaces need care. Watch your head when entering rooms, carry water, and pace the walk at the site's roughly 5,600-foot elevation. Seek shelter in the visitor center during thunderstorms.

Protect the structures and plan for pets

Stay on the visitor route and leave archaeological material in place. Do not feed wildlife. Pets are allowed in the parking and picnic areas and on the Old Spanish Trail, but not in the visitor center or on the archaeological trail. Service animals are excepted. Arrange care for a pet rather than leaving it in a hot vehicle.

Group visits and special activities

Groups should contact the visitor center in advance about arrival and accessibility needs. Commercial tours that provide interpretation need authorization, and activities such as private events or after-hours use need a permit. Check the NPS permit and group guidance before organizing one.

Location and the archaeological route

Use 725 Ruins Road, Aztec, NM 87410. Ruins Road leads north from NM 516 within the city of Aztec. Follow signs to the monument rather than treating a general town location as the entrance.

The archaeological trail is about half a mile. Paved portions can accommodate wheelchairs, but narrow doorways, slopes and steps limit access to some rooms. The Great Kiva floor is reached by 13 steps. Read the NPS accessibility details to choose the parts that suit your visit.

Nearby parks for a separate outing

Navajo Lake State Park is toward Navajo Dam east of Aztec; select a specific lake access area before driving. Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado can be reached via U.S. 550 toward Durango and U.S. 160 west. Its entrance is between Mancos and Cortez, with a further drive inside the park.

Museum, film, and the Great Kiva

Start at the visitor center for the 15-minute film and exhibits, then take the self-guided archaeological walk. NPS suggests allowing one to two hours for a visit. Summer ranger programs depend on staffing and weather, so ask on arrival rather than building the day around an assumed departure.

Visitor services and access

The visitor center has accessible entry, drinking water and wheelchairs available to borrow at the desk. Accessible restrooms and a picnic area serve visitors outside. Large-print and Braille guides and a captioned film provide other ways to follow the site's story.

An ancestral Pueblo community

Ancestral Pueblo people lived here from the late 1000s through the late 1200s. The architecture reflects connections with Chaco Canyon. Original timber roofs survive in some rooms, while the restored Great Kiva helps explain the scale of a ceremonial building.

Habitats beyond the masonry

Riverbank habitat, pinyon-juniper woodland and open former fields support birds, mammals and reptiles within the monument. Watch quietly from permitted paths and avoid approaching or feeding animals.
