Biebrza National Park in Podlaskie Voivodeship, Poland - map and visitor information

Research checked: . Check linked official notices before travel.

Biebrza National Park protects the Biebrza River valley and extensive peatlands in northeastern Poland. Walking routes and water routes offer different ways to explore the wetlands, but water levels can change both plans. A land-trail ticket, a water-trail ticket and an additional paddling permit serve different purposes.

Highlights

  • Wetland landscapes: the meandering river, peatlands and open marsh habitats define the park.
  • Szuszalewo boardwalk: a 1.6 km loop offers a defined wetland walk, with a parking place and shelter near its entrance.
  • River trips: the Biebrza’s published water route needs careful section-by-section planning because closures interrupt some passages.

Fees, hours, and seasonal access

TopicDetails
Trail admissionA standard one-day land-trail ticket costs PLN 10 per person; eligible reduced admission is PLN 5. Water-trail one-day tickets have the same rates but are a separate ticket category.
Additional paddling permitFrom January 1 to June 30, the Osowiec–Brzostowo section requires a PLN 7 per-person permit in addition to water-trail admission. The daily permit limit is 25 people. Additional permit requirements also cover the specified Rudzki Canal and Wissa sections.
Current route closuresThe Barwik–Gugny section from Barwik parking to the iron bridge over the Kosódka is closed from October 9 until approximately October 30, 2026. Park sections of the Ełk and Jegrznia kayaking routes are closed under the September 15, 2026 notice.
Visitor informationThe park information point at Osowiec-Twierdza opens on working days, 7:30–15:30 outside the main tourist season. These are information-desk hours, not a park-wide access schedule.
Outdoor hoursTourism is permitted from one hour before sunrise to one hour after sunset. Check any route-specific restrictions before setting out.

Safety information

Wet conditions can turn a previously dry route into a difficult marsh crossing. Boardwalks, stairs and towers can be slippery. Check the current trail and road notices, especially before committing to a longer walk. The Green Velo connection to park headquarters is closed on the internal railway-road section; the park lists road detours.

Visit responsibly

Keep wildlife undisturbed and follow the rules for the particular route. Dogs are prohibited in strictly and actively protected areas, apart from assistance dogs accompanying their users. Ask the information point about the intended route before bringing a pet. Use the park’s published preparation and safety guidance when selecting equipment for wet terrain.

Reservations and permits

Reserve limited paddling permits through the park-linked ticket service or the information point. During the January–June permit period, the 38 km Osowiec–Brzostowo section must be completed in one day; overnighting at Biały Grąd is unavailable then. The official ticket and permit page explains the different products, eligibility reductions and sales channels.

Maps, location, and access

The protected valley lies in Podlaskie Voivodeship. The park headquarters and information point are at Osowiec-Twierdza 8, near Goniądz. That address is a planning base, not a single entrance to the whole valley. Use the official route directory to choose a walking or water route and identify its actual starting point.

Nearby parks and protected areas

  • Narew National Park: reach the Kurowo visitor area on a separate road journey south toward the Białystok region; check the current boardwalk restrictions.
  • Łomżyński Park Krajobrazowy Doliny Narwi: the protected river valley around Drozdowo and Łomża is another regional stop accessible by road.

Things to do

For a defined walking outing, follow the red-marked Szuszalewo loop. Its boardwalk starts near the village, northwest of the Dąbrowa Białostocka–Lipsk road; rain and snow can leave its surface slippery. For paddling, check the selected stage carefully: a Biebrza section around the wooden bridge in Osowiec is temporarily closed. Low water and vegetation can also obstruct channels.

Facilities and accessibility

The Education and Management Center at Osowiec-Twierdza contains the park’s information point, where visitors can obtain route advice and buy the appropriate ticket. Other information points are distributed around the valley. Water access to the Lipsk camping area can be obstructed, so paddlers should confirm launching arrangements with its operator before relying on it.

About the park

History

The park was created in 1993 to protect the Biebrza Basin’s peatlands. It joined the Ramsar list of internationally important wetlands in 1995. Its conservation purpose concerns the functioning river valley and its habitats, rather than a single scenic viewpoint.

Wildlife and habitats

A mosaic of marshes, peatlands and river habitats supports rare wetland birds and other animals. Extensive farming has also helped retain some of these habitat patterns. Bird observation should remain on permitted routes; an important refuge is not a promise of a particular sighting.
