Choose the northeastern shore for visitor access

The northeastern day-use area has a ramp, dock and picnic area. The alkaline lake supports little fish life, so choose another destination for fishing.

Fees, hours, and seasonal access

Prepare for cold water and other boats

Wear a life jacket on the water. Cold immersion can become dangerous quickly. Operate at a safe speed and give other users room. Review Montana boating safety before launching.

Keep pets off swimming beaches

Keep pets leashed, normally within eight feet unless signs require otherwise. Pets cannot use swimming beaches. Remove pet waste. Keep fires in designated areas and observe campground quiet hours from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Match the booking to the real park season

Use the authorized campsite listing for site details. Reservations require at least one day’s notice and extend up to three months ahead. Confirm late-season access with staff. Groups or events of more than 30 people require a special-use permit.

Watercraft entering Montana need inspection before launching. Stop at open inspection stations along the route. Nonresident vessels also need a Vessel AIS Prevention Pass: $30 motorized or $10 nonmotorized. Check inspection arrangements before travel, especially outside the station season.

Other protected places in northeastern Montana

Medicine Lake National Wildlife Refuge lists 223 North Shore Road in Medicine Lake. Farther southeast, Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site is reached from Bainville by Route 327 toward North Dakota 1804. Check each destination’s access before adding the drive.

Walk the shore or plan a boating visit

The official trail map names Shoreline Trail East, Shoreline Trail West and West Access Trail. Ask staff about current surfaces before following them. For a boat outing, complete the inspection and permit steps before reaching the ramp.

Electric sites and basic shoreline services

Ten electric campsites and two electric double sites serve campers. A vault toilet, picnic area, ramp and dock support visitors.
