Description
Malibu Creek State Park is a vast 8,215-acre (3,318 ha) state park located in the Santa Monica Mountains in Southern California. The park features a rolling terrain of oak woodlands and grassland hillsides, as well as a densely wooded riparian canyon. It is one of the largest county parks in the country, and contains numerous creeks and streams, including Malibu Creek which flows year-round. Visitors to these areas can experience a wide variety of outdoor recreational activities, such as hiking, mountain biking, fishing, swimming, bird watching, and wildlife viewing.
The park is home to a vast array of wildlife, including the iconic California Golden Eagle, the endangered California red-legged frog, and Coastal California mule deer. It is named for the creek that flows through it, and is the only park in California to still contain all five Spanish Land Grants. The park is also historically significant as the filming location for numerous television shows and movies, such as M*A*S*H, The Ranch, Firefly, Lord of the Rings, and Planet of the Apes.
Malibu Creek State Park is divided into two main areas: the watershed and the grasslands. The watershed area is bordered by the Santa Monica Mountains on the north, the Pacific Coast on the west, and the Santa Susana Mountains on the east. This region is the source of numerous hiking trails, creeks and streams, and is blanketed with rocky terrain, scrub and mature oak trees. The centrepiece of the watershed is Malibu Creek, which is home to many of the park’s best swimming holes, waterfalls and rock pools.
The grasslands area is made up of open meadows and rolling hills, covered in native grasses and shrubs. It is the perfect habitat for large animals such as mule deer, bobcats, coyotes and the occasional mountain lion. The trails here take visitors through cheerful meadows, fragrant shrub lands and pockets of oak woodland. At the center of the vast grasslands is the old M*A*S*H filming site, which is still used for filming from time to time and which offers a unique historical experience.
Malibu Creek State Park is a perfect destination for nature lovers looking for a tranquil getaway. Whether you’re looking for a peaceful hike, a swim in a secluded pool, or a chance to spot some wild animals, Malibu Creek State Park has something for you.
