Warta Mouth National Park in Lubusz Voivodeship, Poland - map and visitor information

Research checked: . Check linked official notices before travel.

Warta Mouth National Park protects river wetlands near Kostrzyn nad Odrą and Słońsk in western Poland. Park Narodowy „Ujście Warty” is a birdwatching destination where water levels help determine which routes you can use. Outdoor entry is free. For an indoor introduction, book the separate Ornitovo education center in Słońsk; it is not at the park headquarters in Chyrzyno.

Choose a wetland route and keep a flood alternative

  • Ptasim Szlakiem: a concrete-slab route from Przyborów crosses open bird habitat. Its 2 km outward leg returns by the same way, making a 4 km walk.
  • Olszynki: a 3 km loop near Kamień Mały combines alder woodland, embankments, and boardwalks.
  • Ornitovo: a paid exhibition explains the wetlands and their birds in Słońsk, away from the outdoor trailheads.

Fees, hours, and seasonal access

TopicDetails
Outdoor admissionEntry to Warta Mouth National Park is free. Outdoor visits are allowed from dawn to dusk on routes open to visitors.
Flood accessWater can cover routes, including Ptasim Szlakiem in winter and early spring. Do not enter a flooded road. Check the park's current visitor guide before selecting a route.
Ornitovo admissionPLN 25 standard or PLN 15 reduced per person. Children under 4 enter free. English and German audio guides cost PLN 5. Reserve the required time slot through the official Ornitovo information and booking page.
Ornitovo seasonExhibition hours change between summer and winter, with additional holiday closures. Select an operating date and time when booking; the ticket office closes one hour before the exhibition.
Closed viewpointThe Chyrzyno observation tower is closed because of its technical condition. Do not plan to climb it.

Keep distance from water, livestock, and damaged roads

Wet boardwalks become slippery. Avoid tree-lined paths during strong winds. Do not approach grazing livestock or electric fences. The authority warns of poor surfaces on Żółta Droga and deep mud on the Kamieńska Grobla section toward the Warta; leave a car at the designated tower parking rather than attempting that muddy section.

Watch birds from the designated routes

Carry binoculars and observe quietly. Keep food and litter with you. Dogs on leashes are allowed only in the park's northern Polder Północny–Witnica area, including Olszynki and Torfianka. Do not apply that permission to routes south of the Warta. Kayaking access is limited to the Warta River, rather than the park's smaller channels.

Book the indoor visit and notify large trail groups

Advance timed tickets guarantee admission to Ornitovo; arriving without one depends on availability. Individual entry slots run every half hour, with group entry on the hour. For groups of more than 20 using the described nature routes, notify the education team at +48 95 752 40 26. A group notification is separate from an exhibition reservation.

Chyrzyno, Przyborów, and Słońsk serve different visits

The park lies near the German border in Lubusz Voivodeship. Headquarters and the Chyrzyno information point occupy one site; Ornitovo is at ul. 3 Lutego 90 in Słońsk, beside road 22. Ptasim Szlakiem starts at Przyborów. Olszynki is approached through Kamień Mały. Select a named trailhead rather than routing to the park's general map label.

Nearby landscape parks

Park Krajobrazowy „Ujście Warty” is a separate landscape-park designation around the same river region, including the Słońsk, Witnica, Kostrzyn, and Górzyca areas. Łagowsko-Sulęciński Park Krajobrazowy is another option on a drive toward Sulęcin and Łagów. These names identify different protected areas, so check the destination before starting the car.

Use a short walk or a longer polder route

Ptasim Szlakiem offers open views from a firm concrete surface when it is not flooded. Parking, a shelter, toilets, a viewing platform, and a hide serve this route. Olszynki puts more of the walk in wet alder woodland. Cyclists must push their bikes on its boardwalks.

For a longer outing, the northern polder has a cycle loop of about 30 km, with shorter variants. Its dirt surfaces can be difficult, and beaver burrows create additional hazards. Choose the distance according to the day's conditions and the group's ability. The official nature-route descriptions identify starting points and surfaces.

Plan indoor services separately from trail infrastructure

Ornitovo has free car and coach parking and audio guides for visitors who do not read Polish. Its exhibition has eight rooms. The Chyrzyno information point operates on weekdays, 7:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m.; those office hours do not define outdoor access. Some nature routes have shelters, towers, or hides, but a listed tower is not automatically open. Confirm current conditions if you need a firm surface or step-free access.

A river landscape shaped by floods and drainage

From managed floodplain to national park

The park was established in 2001. Its landscape also records much older river engineering: eighteenth-century drainage and regulation created polders and changed the use of the valley. Today, conservation includes habitats shaped by both river processes and centuries of farming.

Two sides of the Warta have different water regimes

The Warta divides the park into a northern polder protected by a levee and a southern floodplain that can inundate naturally. Meadows, pastures, channels, and standing water provide feeding and resting habitat for birds. Migration, breeding, and wintering bring different viewing opportunities. Flooding can benefit the wetland even when it prevents a planned walk.
