Réserve de parc national des Collines-Ondulées protects a northern Québec landscape of folded rock, long lakes, and rivers. Québec lists the territory as a national park reserve, rather than an established national park. The reserve lies north of Schefferville, where the Labrador Trough’s geology gives the protected territory its physical character.

Provincial protection status

Québec’s protected-area register identifies Collines-Ondulées as a national park reserve. It names the Ministère de l’Environnement, de la Lutte contre les changements climatiques, de la Faune et des Parcs as the responsible authority. The reserve belongs to Québec’s protected-area system; it is not a federal Parks Canada unit.

North of Schefferville

The protected territory covers approximately 1,659 square kilometers in Nord-du-Québec. Québec’s 2008 description locates it about 80 kilometers north of Schefferville. This is a geographic reference, not a driving distance or a visitor route.

For boundary identification, use the registered territory rather than a general map search for the reserve’s name. A territory reference point should not be used as an assumed entrance.

Folded rocks, lakes, and an ecological transition

The reserve represents part of the Labrador Trough, a geological belt in northern Québec. Québec’s 2008 reserve description explains that parallel folds contain lava and sedimentary rocks. Lakes and rivers extend between these long rock formations.

The chains of hills form a transition area for boreal and northern plants and animals. This makes the relationship between landform and habitat central to the reserve’s conservation interest. The same announcement places the territory within the Ungava Bay Basin natural province.

On October 7, 2008, Québec included Collines-Ondulées in an announcement of additional protected territories. The historical announcement gave its area as about 1,659.5 square kilometers. The current register records 165,947.26 hectares, consistent with that rounded historical figure.
