Antelope Island State Park combines Great Salt Lake shoreline, free-ranging bison, and backcountry trails in northern Utah. Visitors reach the island by a road causeway. Plan wildlife viewing from a safe distance, and choose your campground carefully: water and hookups are available at some sites, while others require a self-sufficient stay.

Fees, hours, and seasonal access

Give bison room

If a bison stops feeding or resting and focuses on you, slowly back away. Wait inside your vehicle when one blocks the road. On a trail, turn back rather than trying to squeeze past. Never approach for a photograph, feed an animal, or attempt to touch it.

Warm-season insects include biting midges, particularly April–June. Repellent does not work against these tiny flies; a fine-mesh head net helps. Check current conditions and fire restrictions before packing for a stay.

Protect wildlife and nesting areas

Stage 1 restrictions prohibit open fires except in approved fire rings or grills at developed campgrounds or day-use areas with a pressurized running-water system. Do not assume that a primitive campsite permits a fire. Confirm the rules for your exact site before lighting one.

Backcountry travel follows the designated trail system. Leash dogs on trails and around camp. Drones are prohibited March–November; December–February use requires a permit. Follow posted restrictions even where an activity normally operates.

Book the right overnight site

Use the reservation service linked from the camping and lodging guide. Ordinary campsite reservations must be made at least two days ahead; the preceding day and arrival day use first-come availability. Split Rock Bay backcountry sites require an advance reservation and have no walk-up bookings.

Special events and professional shoots require separate park approval. An overnight booking does not replace that permission.

Location and transport

The causeway links the mainland near Syracuse with the island. Use the official park map and entrance directions for your route. Arrange your return transport before entering: the park warns that rideshare operators do not collect passengers inside the park.

Nearby parks

• Willard Bay State Park: Return to the mainland and follow I-15 north to the park's North or South Marina access.
• Great Salt Lake State Park: Reach this separate marina park by road on the lake's southern shore. There is no road connection across the lake from Antelope Island.

Choose a trail, beach, or ranch visit

Hike, cycle, or ride horses on routes that permit your activity. Frary Peak and Dooly Knob trails exclude bikes and horses. Road cyclists share the roadway without designated bike lanes.

Combine a shorter outing with the ranch exhibits or Bridger Bay Beach. Wildlife can interrupt a planned route, so leave room to turn around. The annual bison roundup also affects the experience: the 2026 bison push is scheduled for October 24. Check the official roundup arrangements if traveling for that event.

Campground services and accessibility

Bridger Bay has tent and RV sites, including an upper loop with water and electric hookups. Both loops have flush toilets and showers. Ladyfinger is a short walk-in tent campground without water or electricity. Split Rock Bay requires a five-mile hike from the nearest parking and has no water, shade, or electricity. Fires are prohibited at Ladyfinger and Split Rock Bay.

Bridger Bay includes designated accessible campsites. A trail chair is available through the visitor center and requires at least two helpers. Ask staff about arrangements and the route you plan to use.

About the island

Ranching and earlier inhabitants

Evidence of Fremont habitation predates the ranching era, and Ute people used the island into the nineteenth century. Fielding Garr built the ranch house in 1848–1849. Its buildings help explain the island's later role as grazing land.

Rangeland and lake habitats

Alongside bison, the park supports pronghorn, mule deer, and bighorn sheep. Shore habitats attract large numbers of birds. Keep wildlife watching separate from approaching or disturbing animals.
